Entering the Boiling Isles!
Part 2 of my discussion of world building in "The Owl House"
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the photos used in this blog post.
Spoiler warning: Some information I may say has been talked, about or shown in the latest episode of the Owl House, “Watching and Dreaming”.
I know in my last post that when I signed off I had just finished talking about the coven system, but I forgot to say that if I had to join a coven I would pick the Emperor’s coven. Which one would you guys pick? Let me know in the comments.
The Boiling Isles is a land area that Witches and Demons call home. It is made out of the remains of a fallen Titan, the inhabitants do not know much about Titans as they believe the Titan race is extinct.
The titan that makes the boiling isles is lying on its back in the boiling sea, the position of the titan is flat on its back with its arms outstretched to the left and right, its left leg is flat lying in the water and the right leg is bent with the knee raised.
Most notable locations in the show have been noted to be named by where they are on the titan’s body. For example The Knee, a place where in the show Eda, takes Luz to try and help her learn magic. I really liked the episode where we got to see the knee because we got to see some characters get a winter outfits for the snowy climate.
The Knee of the Titan is a mountain for the inhabitants of the boiling isles, the top of the knee bears similarities to a mountain. The altitude of the top of the knee is high enough for snow and ice to form, and from what we have seen the temperature stays at the same level to maintain the snowy effect throughout the months that the show takes place.
Another notable location from the Owl house is the location of the town called Bonesborough. This is the main town, near where Luz lives in the owl house where the characters Luz, Eda, and King live. In Bonesborough is a market that Eda goes to regularly to sell things from her human item collection. This is a cool detail because throughout the show we see how witches who use magic for almost everything would see human contraptions made without magic.
There is an elixir shop named, Mr. Elixir, where Eda buys a specific elixir to help counteract her curse. There is a library that the character Amity Blight was shown to work at, and the friends Luz makes at a magic school live in Bonesborough. Near bonesborough is a magic school called Hexside School of Magic and Demonics, where eventually in the course of the show Eda the acting guardian of Luz enrolls her to learn magic. I thought the school seemed similar to Hogwarts from Harry Potter and when I was doing some research I found out it actually was inspired by Hogwarts slightly.

Near Bonesborough but outside the city limits is The Owl House, home of Eda the Owl lady, King, and temporary home of Luz Noceda. The house has a “Security system” that would be Hooty, the house demon who is on the front door. As explained through the show, Hooty is the owl house, entirely.

The Owl House is where Eda lives and hides out from the law as she is a criminal for not joining a coven. King lives with her because she found King when he was very little and took him and they have been together since. Luz has lived at the Owl House since she made her decision to stay in the demon realm to learn how to be a witch.
Another location on the Boiling Isles is the Looking Glass ruins which are located in the middle of Forearm Forest, but it was never confirmed if it was the left or right forearm of the Titan. Eclipse Lake is similar to the Looking Glass ruins as there is no specific location to find it. Eclipse Lake has an entrance at the top of The Knee. But to find Eclipse Lake characters would need to go through tunnels and underground mines.

The last important place in the Owl house that is part of the Boiling Isles is the Emperor’s castle which is built around a giant heart. This heart is the Titan’s heart. The Titan was dead and yet his heart was still beating, Emperor Belos built his castle around this heart and has been shown in a couple scenes, the final episode “Watching and Dreaming” confirmed that the heart we had seen previously was the Titan’s. We also get some plot progression with the heart, but that will be part of another post.
This has been my talk on key locations on the boiling isles that were centered around parts of the Titan’s body. If you think I missed any leave them down in the comments, and if you made it all the way here, thanks for reading the whole post. Tell me if you guys like my discussion of the owl house, or if you want to see my take on another show, movie, book, or even some comics, let me know in the comments and I’ll check out the media and write how I feel about it.
