I spend a bit of time on YouTube and one of the channels that I subscribe to is Game Theory. If you don’t know this channel I will explain, Game Theory is a channel that makes videos about theories pertaining to specific games. For example Game Theory dives into lore of certain games and they make speculations on the hidden story in the game franchises.
Matpat is the creator of the channel Game Theory as well as his other channels, Film Theory, Food Theory, Style Theory, and GT Live. I prefer to watch more of Matpat’s game theory videos and one of the things he is known for is being a FNAF Theorist. If you don’t know what FNAF is it's Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Matpat was actually one of multiple YouTubers to be asked to be part of the new Five Nights at Freddy’s movie. Matpat is a YouTuber that I greatly admire for his work as a theorist. Sometimes I don’t agree with what he theorizes but then sometimes I enjoy listening to his theories.
One thing about me is that I am always curious about why people say things at certain times or why they think a certain way. That usually tends to backfire on myself because I don’t know when to shut up and I usually say the wrong things at the wrong times. But watching Matpat make videos about theories helps me feel not necessarily ‘better’ but I do feel a sense of satisfaction to an extent.
I tend to look and scroll through the Game Theory channel to see if Matpat has made theories about games that I see other people play. For example I had watched some other YouTubers play an indie horror game called Poppy Playtime. When I was the playthroughs, I was already thinking to myself about what some of the clues in the game were leading to story-wise.
So when I saw Matpat play the game he played it with the intention of looking at all the details of the game. I like it when Matpat plays the game and sometimes pauses the game just to say his thought about what the possible story behind the game is or he makes a skit about an insignificant detail and how it is the key to the whole plot.
I admire Matpat for a lot of reasons, one of them is how much time he puts into playing the games and looking for answers that might not have been in the game to properly cultivate a theory for the specific game, show, or whatever he’s making a theory about.
I will use his theories about FNAF as an example again, he didn’t only rely on details from the game itself because the FNAF brand is more than games. I personally haven’t looked into buying anything about FNAF, but Matpat tells his audience where he referencing facts when he pulls them into his theories. He references books and comics that were made for FNAF by its creator.
Matpat has even made a timeline of events from the graphic novels, books, and games for FNAF. Matpat goes through those items and when he plays the FNAF games for his channel he comments on how the developers brought back certain details that were from older games in the franchise or from the books.
I have seen more of his game theory videos so I will be talking about his Game Theory channel for than the others. But who knows in the future I might make another post and talk about one of his other channels.
Matpat also makes Game Theory videos about other games and he does theories on Poppy Playtime, Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Garten of Banban, Legend of Zelda, and other games. I know some of these games and some I have only heard other people reference them but I haven’t played them or seen any playthroughs.
Another game I like to watch Matpat make theories about is a game called Poppy Playtime. Matpat actually recently made a video about a rough timeline of events for the Poppy Playtime universe. He not only looked at the details from within the game but also at all the teasers and trailers from the company behind the game.
Matpat looks for clues in images that the creators of Poppy Playtime put out and he edits the images to see if there are hidden clues from the art. Like secret messages or images that are only seen if you turn up the brightness of the image.
Matpat has a catchphrase of sorts from his career as a theorist. Where he says in a slightly lower and raised voice, “LOOOOOORRRRRE!” And so it was a big meme on the internet for a while that when people mentioned ‘Lore’ comments following it would mention Matpat.
I enjoy watching Matpat’s videos and use them as a jumping off platform to my own personal theories to games. Recently I have been watching more of Matpat’s Poppy Playtime and recent FNAF theories.
I personally don’t go deep diving into the internet to find the clues Matpat does to craft these theories but what I like about Matpat is the way he formats his videos. Matpat likes to bring in concrete information that is provided by the game first. Then he brings in information given from outside of the game like the developers Twitter.
Depending on how deep into the lore Matpat is in certain videos he may bring up clues in game files from the code of the game. Then last but most certainly not least he gives his theory and speculation.
But normally how I found out if Matpat made a theory video about a game before I just subscribed to his channel was that I would watch other YouTubers play games first. For example around 3 years ago, I watched Markiplier play “There is no game: Wrong Dimension” and recently after rewatching those videos I said to myself, “I wonder if Matpat made a theory video on this game. I feel like he would.” So I looked and found that Matpat did make a few videos about this game.
That’s all for this post, stay tuned for the next time I talk about Matpat’s other channels and what I think about them. As always I welcome post suggestions and recommendations in the comments. I also wanna hear your opinions about my posts and their topics.
